Sounds of Indigenous talent in The Hague

NAIDOC Week grooved The Hague this year, with the help of Australian Indigenous reggae band, Dubmarine. Supported by the Australian Embassy to the Netherlands, Dubmarine met journalists and music industry professionals during their stay.
Dubmarine have been touring the European summer festival circuit for the past month, basing themselves in the Netherlands. On 10 July Dubmarine performed at The Hague’s largest nightclub, Het Paard van Troje where they had the crowd dancing right from the start. D-Kazman, wowed the audience with his aerial gymnastics and vocal acrobatics as he reproduced didgeridoo sounds with his voice.
Cat Walker, talented female vocalist, hit all the right high notes and charmed the crowd in Dutch. Dubmarine truly lived up to its reputation for powerful, rich sound, with the support of trombones, keyboard, drums, guitar and bass. This is the first time an Indigenous Australian band has played at “the Paard”, which over the years has hosted greats including Pearl Jam, U2 and Prince. The venue also hosts reggae icons such as Alpha Blondie, who regularly plays at Sommerjam in Cologne, Germany. In a reception for the band hosted by the Australian Embassy, Australian Ambassador Lydia Morton explained to the international audience the significance of NAIDOC Week as a celebration of Australian Indigenous culture and achievements and its theme this year of Closing the Gap by leading their way.She congratulated Dubmarine for “leading their way” in the musical field – recognised by their 2009 ‘Best Band’ nomination at the Deadly Awards.

AUSSIE RULES – Looking for sociable players

The inaugural intra-Dutch Aussie Rules competition started recently. The very sociable Hague team, “The Ooievaars” are looking for more people interested in training and playing. Emphasis is on social rather than serious sportsmen/women but everyone is welcome. Training is twice a week: Wednesday evenings (6:30-8:30) and Saturday afternoons, (1pm-3pm) in the Zuiderpark near the Basketball courts on Soestdijksekade - easily identified in the park; mainly by the kicking of an Aussie Rules Ball, and via the calls of "Bloody Good Kick Mate!". If you’re interested, please contact Jason at denhaag@aussierules.nl
